Nick Poulos is a high-performance leader with nearly 25 years of experience shaping elite sporting environments across AFL, international rugby and track and field. He holds a PhD in Sports Science focused on complex training and Post-Activation Performance Enhancement (PAPE) and has guided programs through finals campaigns, international tournaments and Olympic and Commonwealth Games cycles, managing the demands of some of the world’s most intense team-sport calendars.
Known for his attention to detail, technical expertise and ability to align high-performance departments under pressure, Nick has refined and evolved systems and processes to develop robust and resilient athletes, while fostering collaboration between performance and medical teams to deliver clarity and consistency. His experience includes leading high-performance programs in the AFL with the GWS Giants and Adelaide Crows, international rugby with Australia’s Men’s Sevens and track and field with Aspire Academy for Sports Excellence in Doha, where he collaborated with some of the world’s leading sports scientists and coaches.
His career has also spanned the Japan Rugby League One (formerly the Japan Top League) with Toyota Verblitz and preparing Tonga for the 2003 Rugby World Cup.
Nick Poulos brings a unique blend of experience across AFL, international rugby and track and field from finals campaigns, international tournaments and Olympic and Commonwealth Games preparation. His career has been defined not just by outcomes, but by leading through adversity, establishing clear processes that support consistency and mentoring staff who now lead high-performance programs of their own.
With a PhD in Sports Science, dual accreditation as an ASCA Master Coach and ESSA High Performance Manager and currently more than 20 peer-reviewed publications, Nick provides a level of technical expertise informed by evidence-based practice and significant real-world experience across multiple high-performance systems. This combination supports informed and effective decision-making in performance environments with complex demands.
His approach is shaped by experience across varied high-performance settings, with a focus on clarity in daily operations and dependable execution under pressure. He supports consistent communication across disciplines and the coordinated delivery of daily operations in demanding environments.
During 2025, Nick Poulos first joined me on the podcast to discuss performance under pressure. The response from that conversation was immediate and overwhelming. It was clear that Nick’s work in elite sport translated powerfully into the world of business leadership.
Because of that response, we invited Nick to present at The Complete Leader Conference, where he helped leaders clearly understand the connection between performance in sport and performance in business - the discipline, the preparation, the training, and what it truly means to get yourself and your business
ready for the grand final.
Nick shared powerful moments with the room. His ability to make high-performance principles practical, relatable, and immediately applicable stood out. He was voted as delivering one of the most outstanding presentations of the conference.
Nick’s work in the field deserves to be shared on the stage. His knowledge allows people not just to perform better - but to profit from elite performance thinking in their leadership and their business.

“I’ve had the privilege of knowing Dr. Nick Poulos for more than two decades, during which we’ve built a lasting professional relationship shaped by a shared passion for elite athlete preparation, evidence-informed practice, and high-performance leadership.
We first connected through academic and sports science networks prior to our respective appointments in Japan’s Top League, and have since continued to collaborate across sports, continents, and evolving professional roles. Nick’s expertise is both broad and deep — spanning AFL, Rugby Union, Rugby Sevens, and track and field — but what consistently sets him apart is his ability to lead multidisciplinary high-performance departments through uncertainty, pressure, and change. His leadership is grounded in system thinking, empathy, and clarity, particularly during times of crisis, whether organisational, cultural, or personal.

I’ve had the privilege of working closely with Nick Poulos for over a decade. We first connected at Aspire Academy for Sports Excellence in Doha, where we lived and worked side by side within a high-performance environment — and even the same residential compound. That proximity gave me daily insight into how Nick operated: grounded, consistent, and deeply committed to both people and performance.
Later, during his tenure as Head of High Performance at the Adelaide Crows, Nick invited me to consult within the AFL environment — a clear reflection of his openness to innovation, his belief in evidence-based practice, and his willingness to challenge assumptions with intent. Our collaboration focused on improving applied sports science practices and refining monitoring systems to better support athlete preparation. His approach has always been to bring in people who can make a meaningful contribution to the program and elevate overall standards.
Nick has led high-performance departments through real adversity — staff transitions, leadership changes, and personal and professional challenges. He builds tightly aligned teams that can withstand pressure, grounded in shared standards, clarity, and mutual respect. You always knew where you stood with Nick — and what he expected of others, he expected of himself.
He brings a rare blend of technical rigour, operational clarity, and humility. His attention to detail never comes at the expense of the bigger picture. He builds trust through action, treats people with care, and leads with a values-based approach that prioritises performance and people equally.

“In high performance settings, greatness is never the starting point — consistency is. It’s the daily
grind, the small efforts repeated without fail, that drive success. And when you stick to that path,
greatness naturally follows — just as Nick Poulos does, every single day.”
I’ve had the privilege of working alongside Nick Poulos at the GWS Giants over the past six years, where
I’ve observed first-hand his leadership, strategic vision, and influence as High-Performance Manager.
Nick is widely respected across elite sport not only for his outstanding results, but for his calm,
consistent temperament in environments that can often be volatile and emotionally demanding. His
ability to apply reason, provide stability, and lead with clarity allows both staff and athletes to operate
at their best, even under pressure. Whether engaging with senior management, leading staff, or
supporting players, Nick builds trust and cultivates a high-performance culture grounded in
professionalism and care.
What sets Nick apart is his unwavering consistency and clarity of purpose. He sets high standards—
always aligned with long-term success—and fosters an environment where people are empowered to
meet them. Through his leadership, the team has developed a deep belief in their ability to achieve
sustained success. In elite sport, where setbacks are inevitable, that belief becomes the edge between
potential and performance. Nick’s daily commitment to doing the little things right creates the
conditions where greatness can grow—and his influence is felt in every corner of the program.

His tailored programming respected my injury history, reinforcing my physical and mental confidence. The trust he built through his professionalism and genuine care, combined with his exceptional ability to guide and mentor staff and players, significantly contributed to my success as a senior leader and player.

I had the honour of working alongside Nick Poulos from October 2015 to March 2017 in Sydney, during our time with the Australian Rugby 7s Olympic program. Since then, I have continued to seek Nick’s professional advice throughout my subsequent roles in sport.
Together, we prepared for and competed in numerous elite-level competitions, including the annual HSBC World Sevens Series, the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro (XXXI Olympiad), and the Gold Coast 2018 XXI Commonwealth Games.
Nick is known for his relentless work ethic and his consistent, genuine communication with both staff and athletes. He engages in meaningful conversations regularly—and always with care.
Nick is highly accountable, always prioritizing the athlete's wellbeing in every conversation. His strong relationships with coaches and support staff are built on mutual respect for his knowledge, experience, and ongoing contributions to the sports industry through both research and practice.
I commend Nick’s leadership in modelling, challenging, and rewarding positive behaviours in a High-Performance environment. Internationally respected for his expertise, people management, and his ability to foster winning cultures, Nick is a leader who never takes shortcuts—his commitment to excellence is unwavering.

I had the privilege of working with Nick Poulos for several years as a member of the Men's
National Rugby Sevens program.
As Director of Performance, Nick’s impact went far beyond physical preparation, he was
instrumental in shaping the culture and mental resilience of our squad. He understood that elite
performance begins with mindset, and he helped build a culture grounded in accountability,
trust, and unity. Every session, meeting, and recovery block had a clear purpose. Nick
encouraged us to take ownership, not just of our training, but of our roles within the team.
One of Nick’s greatest strengths is his ability to foster resilience. Sevens rugby is brutal -
physically and mentally. The tournament schedule is relentless, and setbacks are inevitable.
Nick prepared us for that. He introduced mental conditioning strategies, worked closely with our
leadership group, and created environments where we could fail safely, learn quickly, and
bounce back stronger.
Nick Poulos was more than a performance director, he was a culture driver, a mentor, a friend,
and a key part of my sporting journey. His impact on our team went far beyond the scoreboard,
and I’m proud to have worked under his guidance.

As someone who’s been fortunate to work closely with Nick at the Giants for several years, I can honestly say his impact on me both as a player and as a person has been immense. Through the highs and lows of my career, he’s been a steady, supportive presence—someone who genuinely cares, challenges you when needed, and always has your back. Looking back on some of the tougher times, I often wonder what path my career might have taken without his guidance.
Nick isn’t just a great operator; he’s an outstanding professional who knows how to connect with both staff and players. His ability to balance genuine care with high standards has been critical in helping me grow as a leader and in shaping the culture we’ve built together at the club. He elevated high performance at the Giants to a new level, and as a result, we enjoyed outstanding on-field success.
While I’m sad to see him leave, I’m excited to see him take this next step. There’s no doubt he will bring the very highest level of high performance to life in any athlete or organisation he works with in the future. Whatever comes next will thrive, because he’ll bring the same passion, expertise, and integrity that made him such a valued part of the Giants family.

I could not speak more highly of any individual in my time in football for the last 18 years. Having worked with Nick for seven seasons at the GWS Giants where he held the Head of High Performance position, it was clear to see why he had achieved what he had achieved before arriving at the Giants. His professionalism and organisation to run a tight ship program and one that works in not only a group environment, but for every individual is absolute mastery.
Nick’s wealth of knowledge in high performance programs, sports science practises and knowing and understanding how to get the best out of his players is the best I’ve seen. Not only does he provide a platform where he instils confidence in his players to perform at the highest level, but he also builds extremely strong personal relationships and shows the ultimate love and care players crave.
His consistency in treating everybody the same, showing humility and being an all round, genuine person shone through and the GWS Giants wouldn’t be where it is today without Nick Poulos.
I highly recommend Nick in any high performance setting, whether that be in consultancy, advisory, leadership roles or other. Nick’s honest, genuine and hard working character makes him an ideal candidate for whatever is required in any high level position.

I have known Nick Poulos for over 20 years.
We first met at Easts Rugby Club in the early 2000s. I remember being impressed by this young, energetic, passionate athletic performance director, who seemed to be absolutely on top of all the latest research. Nothing has changed over the years, except perhaps the young!
We have subsequently worked together at Australia Sevens Rugby, and most recently at the GWS Giants. In very demanding roles, Nick has always excelled. His job has been high pressure, with high expectations. He has met these expectations admirably. While pushing players to be in optimal physical condition, Nick has never lost sight of player well being as his primary focus.
Nick has managed to lead complex teams of demanding professionals with humility, calmness and integrity. It has always amazed me how Nick manages to coordinate multiple opinions and demands to universally accepted outcomes.
Nick's integrity, honesty and good humour will see him succeed in whatever endeavours he pursues in the future. On a personal level, I am proud to call Nick a good friend.
I have no hesitation in strongly endorsing Nick in future chosen vocational roles.

I have had the privilege of knowing Nick Poulos since 2006, when he was a graduate student in the Edith Cowan University Master of Strength and Conditioning program and working as the Physical Performance Coordinator and Skills Coach for Toyota’s rugby union team in Japan (Toyota Verblitz). During his PhD studies, which he completed concurrently whilst working in high performance sport, I witnessed firsthand the outstanding quality of his research skills and his ability to translate research into practice.
Since then, I have maintained professional contact with Nick and benefited greatly from his expertise across a range of high-performance sport environments, including athletics, soccer, rugby union, rugby sevens, and AFL. I have consistently been impressed by Nick’s deep knowledge, professionalism, and genuine care for the teams and individual athletes he supports.
More recently, Nick has been a reliable sounding board as I have developed and implemented a robust health and wellbeing monitoring system for my corporate clients. His insights into elite athlete monitoring and preparation have been invaluable, and he has played an integral role in helping refine our corporate monitoring system for early detection of suboptimal health and wellbeing and subsequent targeted intervention. If you are seeking a consummate professional to consult with your elite athletes or high-performing corporate executives, I cannot recommend Dr. Poulos more highly.
